O filme vigilante é um género cinematográfico em que o protagonista ou protagonistas se envolvem em um comportamento vigilante , fazendo justiça com as próprias mãos. Os filmes de Vigilante são geralmente filmes de vingança em que o sistema jurídico falha protagonistas, levando-os a se tornarem vigilantes.
No cinema dos Estados Unidos, os filmes de vigilantes ganharam destaque durante os anos 1970 com “pedras de toque” como Death Wish e Dirty Harry , ambos com várias sequências. O Los Angeles Times noticiou: “A vingança Vigilante foi o tema cinematográfico da década, florescendo nos recintos mais respeitáveis do novo cinema americano ao mesmo tempo que alimentava vários filmes de exploração”, referindo-se a Taxi Driver como um exemplo respeitável do género. Em 2009, relatou que tais filmes estavam voltando após “os relativamente prósperos e pacíficos anos 1990”, com exemplos como Walking Tall (2004), Sentença de morte (2007), Law Abiding Citizen (2009)e Rambo: Last Blood (2019).
